That’s what a study by two researchers at Princeton University in a discussion paper titled “Do Newspapers Matter? Evidence from the closing of the Cincinnati Post.”  They say that “Although our findings are statistically imprecise, they demonstrate that newspapers … can have a substantial and measurable impact on public life.”
