Daniel Goldman, founder and chairman emeritus of Goldman & Associates Public Relations, has passed away at the age of 86. Dan was the father of Goldman & Associates president Dean Goldman, who took the helm of our firm from Dan and gave our agency its current name in 1987.
Dan Goldman was a talented artist and cartoonist who, along with his friend Ira Davidoff, started Cavalier Advertising in Norfolk, Virginia in 1948. It was one of the first two advertising agencies in southeastern Virginia. In 1967, Dan launched Dan Advertising, which served regional and national clients and won many prestigious professional awards. Dan was named Advertising Man of the Year by the Advertising Federation of Tidewater in 1973. When Dean Goldman became chief of Dan Advertising and renamed it Goldman & Associates, Dan continued as the firm’s chairman emeritus. During his retirement, Dan wrote a humorous memoir about his early years in advertising and a moving account of coping with daily health challenges later in life.
Dan’s extensive work on behalf of the community included serving as president of Temple Israel; president of the Advertising Federation of Tidewater; chairman of the Norfolk Community Services Board; and as members of the board of ARC, the Tidewater Better Business Bureau, and Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in Dan’s memory to the charity of your choice.

Dan was the best ever employer and friend anyone could want. My years at the agency are treasured. I miss his laugh, even his sarcasm which was really more dry wit than anything. He made the shop hum and feel more like a family than anywhere I’ve worked since. I would love to read his memoir whenever and if the family makes it available. Thank you, Dan!
